Aloe Vera for Ulcerative Colitis

Aloe Vera is a suculent desert plant.  The gel from the leaves of the plant is used to treat burns and other skin conditions by some people.  Use of Aloe Vera for ulcerative colitis treatment may be indicated based on a number of studies.

Known as the "plant of immortality" by the Egyptians, aloe vera has a long history of use.  However, the laxative latex from the green part of the leaves may have a carcinogenic effect.  The inner leaf is used to make juice and other aloe products, and may contain limited quantities of suspected carcinogens.  The gel has been evaluated for efficacy in ulcerative colitis in a small study.

Safety:  Aloe vera use may decrease the levels of glucose in the blood.
